Measuring your furniture for vinyl strapping is something that can be easily done with a cloth tape measure. We at Chair Care Patio use customer-supplied measurements in order to output a final strap length. It is crucial to provide Chair Care Patio accurate measurements so that the final product will fit perfectly onto your chair frame.

Using a flexible measuring tape, take the hole to hole measurement of the chair frame. Wrap the tape measure completely around the chair frame as if it were a strap itself. Depending what type of application you have, you may have to wrap the tape measure around the frame twice. We see many different types of strap applications here at Chair Care Patio and will explain some of the most common methods and how to measure accordingly.

Determine which type of strap application you have.

Single Wrap

Single wrap chairs will almost always have the holes on the inside of the chair frame. The vinyl strap and rivet are affixed to the inside of the chair frame and the strap comes around the outside of the frame then across the top. In total, the strap makes a ¾” revolution around the chair frame. Measuring for single wrap is simple. Take the cloth measuring tape and start at the hole on the inside of the chair frame. Simply wrap the tape around the outside and over the top to the opposite side. Wrap themeasuring tape around the opposite side of the chair frame and finish at the inside rivet hole. The tape measure should be used and wrapped around the frame exactly as the purple line illustrates. This will be the hole to hole measurement.

Double Wrap

Double Wrap chair frames have holes on the bottom side. The rivet is affixed to the bottom side of the chair frame and is not visible due the strap being wrapped over top itself. Double wrap straps start on the bottom side of the frame and wrap around twice. Again, take the measuring tape as if it were the strap itself and start on the bottom side of the chair frame. Wrap the tape measure around the frame, over itself, and back around. The purple line illustrates how the tape measure should be wrapped around the frame.

Slotted Conversion

The Slotted Conversion method is when you have a slot on the top side or inside of the chair frame. The straps, once removed from the slots, typically will have an arrow shaped head that we do not manufacture. We at Chair Care Patio have found great success in using a standard rivet in these situations. If the slot is located on the inside of the chair frame, measure the chair exactly as you would a single wrap chair. If the slot is located on the top side of the frame, Chair Care Patio highly recommends a double wrap application for affixing the new straps. Please see the slotted conversion instructions found on ChairCarePatio.com for detailed instructions. Measure the frame accordingly for either double wrap or single wrap.

For detailed instructions, see Slotted Conversion instructions found on Chaircarepatio.com.

Steel Tap/Clip Applications

It is not uncommon for some vinyl straps to be attached with steel tabs or clips. Chair Care Patio has found that measuring these types of chairs using the single wrap method wields the best results. The measurement should be taken in the same fashion as a single wrap application. Wrap the tape measure around the outside of the frame and across the top just as you would a normal single wrap chair.

Choosing The Right Type of Rivet for Your Vinyl Strap

Chair Care Patio offers three different types of rivets that can be used for single wrap or double wrap strap applications. In order to determine which rivet you will need careful inspection of the chair frame is required. If the rivet hole is flush (no indention) and located on the inside of the chair frame, the short shank (30-516) rivet will be used. If the rivet hole is pressed or bears a slight indention where it was pressed into the chair frame and is located on the inside of the frame, a long shank rivet (30-515) will be used. The long shank rivet has a slightly longer neck which allows the rivet to seat firmly into the pressed (indented) rivet hole. Holes located on the bottom side of the chair frame will use a double wrap solid shank rivet (30-512).
All rivets fit a 7/32” hole.

Rivets for vinyl strap come in three types

Single Wrap With Flush Hole
Single Wrap With Flush Hole

Hole will be located on the INSIDE of the chair frame.
If the rivet hole is flush on the frame and bears no indention, then the 30-516 short shank rivets will be used to attach the strap.

Single Wrap With Pressed Hole

Single Wrap With Pressed Hole

Hole will be located on the INSIDE of the chair frame.
If rivet hole is pressed into the frame and has a slight indention, a slightly longer rivet will be needed for added depth. The 30-515 long shank rivets will be used in this situation.

Double Wrap

Double Wrap

Hole will be located on the bottom side of the chair frame.
If the hole is located on the bottom side of the chair frame, the 30-512 double wrap solid shank rivets will be used in this situation. Since a double wrap strap wraps on top of itself, a barbed shank is not required on the rivet.

Other Frequently Asked Questions
aluminum rivet

What if I have aluminum rivets?
Aluminum rivets are almost always used for a double wrap application. In the event that you have aluminum rivets, you may either re-use them or use the standard double wrap rivet offered by Chair Care Patio.

What if my chair is slotted and doesn't use a rivet?
Depending on the orientation of the slots on the chair, either a single wrap or a double wrap application will be used and you will have to choose your rivet accordingly. To better help you with this question, please read the Slotted Conversion instructions found on ChairCarePatio.com before placing your order.

Slotted hole

What if the holes in my chair are larger than 1/4"?
In the rare event that the holes in your chair are too large for the rivets offered by Chair Care Patio, we recommend drilling 7/32" holes alongside the existing holes in your chair frame.

Double Wrap Method

Chair Care Patio makes it easy for anyone to repair their outdoor vinyl strap chairs.

Getting Started

Before beginning, make sure that you have the following items on hand:

• Scissors
• Drill
• Gloves
• Baby Powder
• Large Pot of Boiling Water
• Towel
• Tongs

Using scissors or garden shears cut all the existing vinyl straps that need to be replaced. Once all the vinyl straps are cut, remove the vinyl strap from the chair frame by pulling or twisting until the vinyl strap breaks loose from the frame.

Once all the vinyl straps have been removed, Chair Care Patio highly recommends cleaning the chair frame with a mild detergent. Cleaning the frame will ensure that your new vinyl straps will not become dirty during installation.

Using a cloth measuring tape, measure the distance from hole to hole on the chair frame. Make sure to wrap the cloth measuring tape around the chair frame exactly as the vinyl replacement strap will be installed. (For detailed measuring instructions, read the How to Measure instructions found on ChairCarePatio.com).

Take the hole to hole measurement and multiply by .90 (90%), then add one inch.

Example:
Hole to hole measurement = 28”
Hole to hole measurement x .90 = 25.2”
Add one inch.
Cut Length = 26.2”

Chair Care Patio reminds you that vinyl replacement straps will always be cut shorter than the hole to hole measurement due to the fact that they must be stretched over the frame while hot. Heating the straps prior to installation will allow the vinyl replacement strap to be stretched across the frame.

Note: Do not cut all of your vinyl replacement straps at once. Chair Care Patio highly recommends cutting and installing one strap before cutting all of the straps. This allows you to make any adjustments to the final strap length before cutting all of the vinyl straps.

Using a measuring tape and scissors, cut the vinyl straps off of the roll at the desired cut size. Be sure to cut the vinyl straps as straight as possible.

Once the vinyl straps have been cut, holes must be drilled into the strap. Using a drill with a 3/16” drill bit, drill a hole on each end of the strap ½” from the end. After drilling, trim the corners on both sides of the strap using scissors. Trimming ensures that the corners of the vinyl strap will not protrude from the underside of the replacement strap when installed.

Boil a pot of water using a hot plate or heat source. Once hot, insert several straps into the boiling water and wait at least five minutes before removing them. Leaving the vinyl straps in the water a little longer will not hurt them.

Note: Chair Care Patio recommends that gloves be worn at this time before proceeding.

Using tongs, remove the vinyl strap from the boiling water taking care as the vinyl straps will be very hot. Once removed from the boiling water, the vinyl strap should be noodle-like and flexible.

Dry the vinyl strap off with a rag and dip both ends of the vinyl replacement strap in baby powder. The baby powder will keep the vinyl strap from sticking to itself during the double wrap.

While strap is hot, insert the double wrap rivet into one end of the vinyl strap and approach the frame from underneath. Insert the rivet into the hole in the chair frame and bring the strap around the outside of the frame twice.

Stretch the vinyl replacement strap evenly and steadily while pulling the strap over top the opposite side of the chair frame. Pull the strap slightly to the left or right of the hole to allow room for the double wrap.

Using one hand to detain the strap use the other to wrap the vinyl replacement strap around the frame and insert the double wrap rivet into the hole on the underside of the chair frame.

Once the vinyl replacement strap is attached, slide the vinyl over itself and adjust.

Repeat for remaining straps.

If the rivet is difficult to insert, try lightly tapping the rivet into place with a rubber mallet.

Detain the chair frame with one hand while grasping the end of the vinyl replacement strap with the other. Stretch the vinyl replacement strap across the chair frame, pulling from the very end of the strap.

Once stretched, hold the vinyl replacement strap in place with one hand while using your free hand to wrap the strap around the frame and attach the rivet.

Release and adjust the vinyl replacement strap if necessary. The strap will contract as it cools.

Repeat for remaining straps.
